Laura Cortese's Acoustic Evening
Laura Cortese (viool, zang), Dirk Powell (banjo, viool, diatonische accordeon, zang), Kaia Kater (banjo, zang), Anna Massie (gitaar, viool, zang)
Dirk Powell (Louisiana) learned banjo and fiddle from his Kentucky grandfather - James Clarence Hay - and has been part of Louisiana's thriving Cajun/Creole music community since his early twenties. He is a reference on the diatonic accordion for the Cajun style of music. He has toured and recorded with the likes of Joan Baez, Rhiannon Giddens, Eric Clapton, Buddy Miller and Loretta Lynn.
Scottish guitarist and fiddler Anna Massie (Blazin' Fiddles and RANT) hosts BBC Radio Scotland's award-winning folk program "Traveling Folk" and is a gifted singer. She has been nominated three times for 'Best Instrumentalist' at the Scots Trad Music Awards and won the Trad Music in the Media Award in 2021 and the Producer of the Year Award in 2022 for her work on 'Black Isle Correspondent'.
Finally, Kaia Kater joins the team on banjo and vocals. She has received rave reviews from NPR's Tiny Desk, The Guardian, Rolling Stone and No Depression. Through her artful banjo playing and lush songwriting, Kaia draws on influences rooted in Quebec, the Caribbean and Appalachia, reflecting the diversity of her background.
