That's what the press - and a little bit of Oasis - thought of the previous Douglas Firs albums, and the good news: there is a new album. Happy Pt. 2' follows 'Heart of a Mother', the poignant album about Gertjan's late mother, and is about finding happiness again after deep grief, but without letting go of that grief.
Bianca Steck is a young musician, singer and songwriter of British and German descent, born in Barcelona and living in Brussels. With classical training in piano and clarinet, she began writing her own songs at 15, experimenting with harmonies and sounds that enhance her intimate tone and voice.
Lyrics play an important role in her music, which is in keeping with the folk and pop tradition. Her debut album, produced with Catalan pianist Nil Ciuró, will be released soon.
The grief remains, but there is also new hope and energy to be heard. And Gertjan's love for American Roots Music and Indie Folk may come to the fore again on Happy Pt. 2. Together with his brother Sem he went to L.A. to mix the record with Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Ray Lamontagne), because Happy Pt. 2 is about biting into life and adventure.
Douglas Firs will also be performing live, with regular companions Simon Casier (bass, vocals), brother Sem (keyboards, vocals), Laurens Billiet (drums, vocals) and for this concert two extra musicians: Bart Vervaeck and Manon Gögös. They make Gertjan's wild dream come true to add howling pedal steel and saxophone to the live band. An unforgettable evening!
