You may not have seen it coming: a cellist/singer from Guatemala on Boomtown! But Mabe Fratti released one of our favorite records in 2023 with 'Se Ve Desde Aqu'. Her Ghent passage in the Botanical Garden that year was unforgettable.
Her intuitive and experimental music is closely related to the work of pioneers such as Arthur Russell and Kate Bush. From free jazz and ambient to shoegaze and dream pop. There are even snippets of Gregorian chant and Sephardic music from the Jewish tradition. The cello is the foundation of Fratti's music.
But it is topped with a delicious sauce of vintage synthesizers, drones, guitars and field recordings. The combination with her unique, soft voice melts even the hottest press. Pitchfork, The Wire and The Guardian: they're all in.
